“These experiences are, unfortunately, very common,” Catalani said. “Homelessness is not just what people see on the street. There is this often hidden population. … And the greatest risk is for the youngest children.”
New report shows a 12% increase in those experiencing homelessness on Oʻahu
Ryan Catalani, the executive director of Family Promise and a member of the advisory board, said he was concerned that families with children experiencing homelessness had increased 1.5 times faster than the rest of the population.
“For families that don't have a social support network, family or friends they can lean on, if they're already sort of on the economic precipice, then it can be sort of any one factor that can lead to a spiral that leads to homelessness,” he said.

Half of Hawaii Barely Gets By
“A lot of families we serve fall into getting scammed,” says Samantha Church, executive director at Family Promise Hawaii, a nonprofit that helps homeless families transition into permanent housing. “They go to payday advance places, or a lot of them get a car with a loan that’s an insanely high rate. It’s their first time learning about credit and interest rates and basic financial literacy. We have families who don’t know what a credit score is. They don’t realize what affects it and impacts it. It’s a life skill that so few people know.”

With the support of Family Promise of Hawaii, they were able to find some stability, living in hotel rooms until they secured a unit at Kahauiki Village. Says Ashleigh Loa, a housing specialist at Family Promise, “it gives our families a sense of security because they don’t have to worry that they’ll have to leave in a year.”
