Family Promise of Hawai‘i prevents and ends homelessness for families with children by providing critical housing services.
In Hawai‘i, one in 30 young children experience homelessness annually. To address this urgent community crisis, Family Promise of Hawai‘i provides holistic, compassionate, and effective services for hundreds of families each year on O‘ahu and Maui.
Interim Housing (Emergency Shelter)
Our interim housing sites on Oʻahu provide a free, short-term, and safe place for families to sleep, study, and get back on their feet. Each family has their own room. Families in this program work closely with our case managers to quickly return to stable housing.
We serve families of all sizes and compositions, including single mothers, single fathers, two-parent households, and multigenerational families.
Emergency Rental Assistance
Emergency rental assistance prevents homelessness for families or helps them get into stable housing faster. For families seeking emergency shelter, we employ an innovative shelter diversion approach, where we attempt to prevent families from entering the shelter system by connecting them with alternative housing options and one-time rental assistance.
We provide several other forms of rental assistance for families on Oʻahu, including:
-
Homelessness Prevention: Short-term rental or utility assistance that serves families at the verge of becoming homeless to prevent them from losing their housing.
-
Rapid Re-Housing: Short- or medium-term rental assistance to help families experiencing homelessness return to permanent housing.
-
Permanent Supportive Housing: Long-term rental assistance to help families whose head of household has a disabling condition, and who have been experiencing homelessness for a while.
All of our rental assistance is combined with our case management.
Case Management
We provide one-on-one case management in all of our programs to help families navigate their challenges and design individualized solutions. Each family's situation is unique, and our case management team helps families design a path to housing stability and get connected to the appropriate resources.
Although we are primarily housing-focused, our case management approach can include topics such as financial education, workforce development, tenancy training, and many other areas. We partner closely with other organizations to provide additional wraparound services.
Community Engagement
We engage our community to help families build skills and social capital and provide meals, supplies, and other donations.
On Oʻahu, volunteers run weekly events for families, including fun and educational activities for children and skill-building workshops for adults. Volunteers also provide meals several nights a week.
On both Maui and Oʻahu, community supporters provide supplies and other in-kind donations, along with tax-deductible monetary gifts that help us serve more families in need.
